บทสัมภาษณ์: โรงเรียนนานาชาติเรนทรี กับแนวคิดการเรียนรู้ที่สร้างสุข

favorite

(english translation)
Today, Nanmeebooks is going to talk with the school administrators of Raintree International School about the happy learning concept which advocates learning through activities that draw on creativity and fun, like when colouring pictures books becomes art which then extends to learning. They “gave” the equivalent of more than 600,000 baths worth of books to more than 15 schools in need through the project
“Give a future, give a book (Get & Give), you buy, we spread your kindness to flood victims”.

(english translation)
In a world where education emphasizes on results, Raintree International School chose “giving” as a starting point for learning and a syllabus driven by the concept of “purposeful play”. This concept skillfully blends playing and child development while, at the same time, creating an environment for the children to grow. The aim is to encourage students to be creative, communicative and cooperative for their whole life. Discover this special interview with the two executives, two sisters, who are behind this downtown school that believes in “giving” as one of the most important lessons in life.

 (english translation)
Today, Nanmeebooks came to visit Raintree School and we can already tell there are a lot of special things. The ground is green, the environment is cool and pleasant though situated in the middle of the city. We want to know, how did “Raintree” come to be? Also, regarding teaching and learning methods, how is the school different from others?

 (english translation)
        Khun Mai:
The name “raintree” comes from "the monkey pod tree” which is commonly called “rain tree” in English. We felt like this place has quite a lot of monkey pod trees, so when we built the school, the first thing we looked at was where the trees were. Then, we wanted a school that is designed around the trees so that we can keep them as much as possible. We believe that children in cities should have the chance to be close with nature, and we’re lucky enough to be situated in the heart of Sathorn. This area doesn’t really have big trees so we thought of this concept of having a school building in the shape of an “S” that goes round two big trees as two marking points. This way, every classroom sees a bit of greenery, and it creates a relaxing atmosphere favorable for studying.

(english translation)
        Khun Thip:
We mostly use “games” as a teaching and learning method because we think that children want to play. For this reason, if we present “games” that are interesting to the children, the games will highly benefit them. This is why we chose the “purposeful play” teaching method. But it doesn’t mean the children play whatever they want. Every activity is based on the teaching plan we designed. This way, children are learning fundamental skills while playing. Similar to the WIN-WIN teaching method, teachers teach important lessons and students enjoy their classes.

The happiness of the children is the most important thing for Raintree. Here, when it comes to happiness in learning, we hold the principle of the “3 Cs” which are Communication, Creativity and Collaboration.

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:

Our syllabus values community building with life long learners, which is the main benefit that the school holds. This is why, every time we write a teaching plan, we try to promote this idea in every course.

Everyone will see the format of our lessons as well as our teaching and learning method clearly. The teachers make the students work in groups. They don’t only support individual performance, even though some activities are designed this way. But most of the activities are thought around the idea of learning and trying together.

The goal is to teach students to live in community and to work peacefully together. Here’s one simple question that parents often ask us: “How do small children learn to work together?”.

I usually give them this activity as an example: ride a bike. Even though we have several bikes, we only bring out three bikes for a classroom that has around 15 students. Then, we ask the children how they should share the bikes so that they can play together.

If one of my friends is riding a bike and I want to ride it too, how should I ask my friend and tell him or her that I want to ride too? Or, if I’m the one riding a bike and my friend comes over waiting for his or her turn, how should I react and let my friend play?

This is the important basis for learning how to work together, and it’s the starting point of nurturing social skills that we pay attention to. It starts when we’re still small children.

ห้องสมุดที่นี่มีความเป็นห้องพิเศษออกแบบมาอย่างน่าสนใจเลยค่ะ เป็นบล็อกไม้วางเรียงกัน อยากทราบถึงจุดเริ่มต้นของห้องสมุดที่สร้างแรงบันดาลใจแบบนี้ค่ะ

 (english translation)
The library looks very special, it was designed in an interesting way. They're wooden blocks arranged together. We would like to know the origins of this inspiring library.

(english translation)
        Khun Thip:
The love for learning is another backbone of the students at Raintree. The library at Raintree comes from one question: how are we going to make the children love reading? We don’t want them to enter the library only because there’s air conditioning and think that books and reading are boring. So we thought about doing everything possible to make the children like reading. We meant to build a library that inspires and makes children look at reading under a positive light. This is why you can see that the library resembles a maze you need to enter in order to search for the books you want.

Moreover, we don’t force children to read specific books. Here, the children come for books that they will read at home with their parents. And because they chose the books themselves, the parents can more easily tell the story, they don’t have to worry about their child running away while they’re reading. It helps stimulate the children into wanting to listen and learn more. Also, the reading experience gives parents the opportunity to interact with their child.

(english translation)
This library has a few books published by Nanmeebooks. We would like to know how you came to know about Nanmeebooks. Also, we know that the school has a project named “Art auction” for “giving’ in partnership with Nanmeebooks, in particular integrating “giving” in the learning experience. We would like to know the origins of this project.

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:
To be honest, I already knew the CEO of Nanmeebooks (Kim Jongsatitwattana) before and we found out that we have the same vision. We foresaw that books from Nanmeebooks are suitable for small children and that they cultivate values

that are in line with Raintree’s way of thinking.

 (english translation)
        Khun Thip:
The important thing is to teach students how to be good people, how to be good with the people surrounding them,

and how to be responsible when it comes to society and the environment. And “giving” is a way to help others,
it’s one of the main values that resides in the process of nurturing children into being good people.
The values of kindness and helping others, those values merge in the children’s day-to-day lives here, and not in some formal lessons. Here, children are helping others and learning how to act like adults all the time.

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:
Sometimes, we also learn about “kindness”. For example, children tell us how their friend cried one day or how they, themselves, cried one day, and how their friend gave them a tissue while asking “Are you okay?”, or something like that. This small gesture is all about nurturing the values of taking care of your friends, taking care of society, including taking care of the environment. This is why we take interest in nurturing those social values, this way the children can integrate them naturally in their everyday life.

Concerning the “Art auction” that we organise, it started during Christmas. We know that Christmas is a period where parents and friends usually exchange gifts, but as far as we know the children at Raintree are children with a lot of opportunities already. So we felt that this period could be the perfect opportunity to try and be “the one giving” for real as we would give to people who have less opportunities.

This is where the project started. Every year, during Christmas, we don’t have the parents buying and exchanging gifts like everywhere else, but we organise an event where we come as a community to raise funds. This money is then used to help others or is donated to support different projects that can bring changes, whether it is helping children, animals or whatever, as long as it is a project that has values and is suitable to receive such help.

โครงการนี้ทำมานานแค่ไหนแล้วคะ และปีนี้ทำไมถึงเลือกเป็นการให้หนังสือ ภายใต้โครงการ “โครงการมอบอนาคตมอบหนังสือ” เริ่มต้นอย่างไรคะ

(english translation)
For how long have you been working on this project? And why did you decide to give away books this year under the project “give a future, give a book”? How did it start?

(english translation)
Khun Mai / Khun Thip: We do it every year.

 (english translation)
        Khun Mai:
This project started the first year we opened the school. At that time, we noticed that during Christmas people exchange gifts. The parents go and buy presents to exchange them during parties and we felt that instead of offering gifts like usual, we should seize this opportunity to “give” to others. Luckily enough, the parents have the same mindset as us. They want to be the one giving, they want to give to projects that have a real impact.

If you ask why we decided upon Nanmeebooks’ project “give a future, give a book”, to be honest, it’s because we’ve been in touch for long. And we saw that Nanmeebooks does CSP all the time. Also, we believe that the money we spend on the publishing house Nanmeebooks will truly be sent to the donees and materialise this idea of “giving” for real. They may look like ordinary books but we believe that we can bring happiness, and that we have enough power to spark happiness in the children’s hearts who receive those books.

คุณทิพย์: จริง ๆ โครงการเราเปลี่ยนอยู่เรื่อย ๆ  เราหาโครงการใหม่ ๆ แต่พอเป็นหนังสือเราก็คิดว่าต้องเป็นนานมีบุ๊คส์

(english translation)
        Khun Thip:
To be honest, our project changes a bit every year. We’re always searching for new projects but because it concerns books, we think it must be Nanmeebooks.

แล้วโครงการ “Art Auction” ที่นำเด็ก ๆ ไปสู่การให้นี้ทางโรงเรียนมีขั้นตอนการดำเนินการอย่างไรบ้างคะ

(english translation)
Regarding the “Art auction” project that brings the children to face “giving”, how does the school manage it?

 (english translation)
        Khun Thip:
Every year, because the children at Raintree do art that we call “Process art”, we thought that the children have a great potential. They aren’t only doing “art and craft” or simply colouring picture books, but we encourage every student to give a try in doing “process art” and we don’t limit the imagination of the children. When we saw their work, we were sure that we had art that we could sell. As the parents themselves wanted to acquire the children’s art works, we organised an auction. Then we donate all the money we gathered from the auction, without taking the cost of the auction.

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:
This project isn't only about raising benefits, but it also makes the children happy, even the parents are happy to be able to participate, to play a role in this project and to see the art works of their children. They feel like they’re part of something good. This project is now a big event that everyone is waiting for every year.

คุณทิพย์: กิจกรรมมีทุกปี แต่เราอาจเลือกสิ่งที่บริจาคหรือการบริจาคที่ต่างกันออกไป
(english translation)
        Khun Thip:
The event happens every year but we can still choose what we donate and different types of donations.

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:
Last year, we chose books because the school wanted to nurture children into being scholars and books can help in that matter. To put it simply, if parents ask us what they should do so that their child becomes a good student. Several studies advocate that “reading books with your child” is the best way to develop different skills, whether it’s languages, critical thinking or the love for reading. Even though some children can’t read, the fact that their parents sit down to read and discuss with them helps them develop efficiently. And we believe that book help answer every question. Books are valuables that are worth the price you pay for.

แล้วผลตอบรับจากโครงการนี้เป็นอย่างไรบ้างคะ

(english translation)
And how is the project received?

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:
We just received feedback and pictures from Nanmeebooks. We’ll send them to the parents so they can see what happened to the money we raised in December during the event “give a book, give a future”. Now, we are able to donate books to more than 15 schools, counting 300 books per school. Everyone was very happy and talked about it with the children, saying that the pictures they drew were able to help many children, which made them very happy. Even the parents were delighted to know that what they have means they can help the children be the adults who are giving. It means that the donees are also receiving opportunities and happiness in their life. Most of the parents wish to participate in that act of kindness and generosity.

 (english translation)
        Khun Thip:
Even though there is no direct follow-up or feedback, the parents are happy to give, and so since the day of the auction to the donation process. They don’t expect anything more, but they feel happy and proud that they helped others.

We thank Nanmeebooks for sharing pictures and some follow-ups with us. We’re happy to see whatever we can. We’re not expecting anything because we all trust the company that is Nanmeebooks. We trust that the money we raised will be used in good projects that have a real impact.

อยากทราบความรู้สึกของทั้งสองท่านที่มีต่อโครงการ “มอบอนาคตมอบหนังสือ” ของนานมีบุ๊คส์หน่อยค่ะ

(english translation)
We would like to know your feelings regarding the project “give a future, give a book” organised by Nanmeebooks.

(english translation)
        Khun Mai:
We opened the school because we wanted to value education and our school doesn’t have many students, but we know well that there are still millions of children who are not able to receive an education of this kind.

This is why we want to do something to help other children and books offer a good solution. And I think that books are a medium for education that don’t need a lot of money, but they also have the most impact and are what is the most valuable in education. We really appreciate that Nanmeebooks can act as a good medium for education alongside us. It’s true that there’re a lot of methods, but the Nanmeebooks’ project echoes with the school’s views in many ways. Even if government schools are far away, books can truly be a medium that reaches every school.

(english translation)
        Khun Thip:
We must thank Nanmeebooks for this project as well, for being the coordinator in this mission to help others, to help children that are far from us. Thank you Nanmeebooks for being our partner and for making this amazing project possible, because if we were on our own, it would have been very difficult to reach every school. But Nanmeebooks helped us right there, we didn’t have to struggle when it came to sending the books. We hope to continue this amazing project in the future, because besides schools, this project can help other organisations, other institutes. Also, if everyone gathers together, I think the results would be even greater.

        Khun Mai:
We know very well how great the potential of Nanmeebooks is. Also, it’s a project that Nanmeebooks manages alongside “TaejaiDotcom, a community for Thai People” which assures us even more that the project makes a real difference. For the entrepreneurs or for schools that are looking for a good project that makes them feel that the money they donated is really sent to the donees or has a real impact, you can rest assured and trust the project managed by Nanmeebooks. I personally believe that projects of this kind can answer stakeholders' questions with ease, because you can clearly explain that the money they invested is actually reaching the hands of the children. And this is an important point for everyone joining the donation, they need to see concrete results.

The important thing is that with a project of this kind, you can choose to do it as much as you like it, whether you have a big budget or not. You can still make it possible, contrary to other projects which set a minimum amount for donations. For example, you need to reach a fourth of the spending before being able to buy anything. But with this book project, even if you don’t donate much, there is an extra book being donated. And whether it is only 10 books, a hundred, a thousand, or a million, we can all bring happiness and inspiration to the children, and, in the same way, answer the different inquiries that need a clear explanation regarding the budget.

คุณทิพย์: ทิพย์มองว่าส่วนที่สำคัญจริง ๆ คือ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นบริษัทเล็กหรือใหญ่ ทุกคนสามารถมีส่วนร่วมกับโครงการนี้ได้

        Khun Thip:
I think that the most important thing is whether you’re a small or a big company, you can still join this project.

        Khun Mai:
Also, this project has proof assuring that every bath that was donated did indeed reach the donee, and you can use it to reduce your taxes.

The more we learn about your teaching methods and the environment at Raintree International School, the more we’re sure that children are having fun, are receiving a good education and are enjoying every activity the school is organising and creating for every one of the children. All of this in a way that the parents can trust the quality and the development that the children are receiving.

คุณทิพย์: ขอบคุณที่เยี่ยมเยียนมาหาพวกเรานะคะ  เรนทรีเป็นโรงเรียนที่ให้ความสำคัญกับ “ความสุขของผู้เรียน” ผ่านการพัฒนา Creativity, Communication และ Collaboration ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ด้วยความสุข เป็น Community ของ Life-Long Learners อย่างแท้จริงค่ะ

 (english translation)
        Khun Thip:
Thank you for your visit. Raintree is a school that values “the happiness of its students” by developing three skills: Creativity, Communication and Collaboration in an environment that promotes learning through fun. The school is a real community of life long learners.

(english translation)
Raintree International School is not only a place for learning, but it is a place where the values of sharing and giving are cultivated. These values are nurtured through activities like “Art auction” where the children learn that their art works can bring changes into this world.

Joining hands with Nanmeebooks is not only about organising a project together, but it is about creating “an ecology of learning” which has an impact that goes further than the school’s fence.

The features of the project

The money you donate is a strong power that helps send books to children who were impacted by floods.

Nanmeebooks is partnering with Taejai to manage the project “Get and Give, you buy, we share”. We invite you to donate in order to buy books for children in schools that were impacted by the floods in the North and in Isan, in particular schools that lost their textbooks in the floods.

For every donation, Nanmeebooks will add a Go Genius Mini book – a small book, easy to bring around, that promotes knowledge. It is fun to read and suitable for children of every age. It helps with learning, with developing skills and imagination.

All this time, the project sent books to more than 162 schools, but there are still many more schools waiting for your help.

Help us build a good future for Thai children with the power of books and reading.
